It occurs to me, as I sit here in the bar at Ottawa’s Macdonald-Cartier International Airport, that this trip to Winnipeg for the Labour Day long weekend will be my last. The next time I travel to Winnipeg, it won’t be a trip so much as a move — a voyage home.
The thought of returning to a city I thought I’d left behind, buried in the annals of my own personal history, excites me. And it’s this feeling of excitement — a feeling I never thought I’d have about my hometown — that I find so amusing. Evidently, it is possible to surprise oneself.
It’s hard to say if this particular trip will be any different than previous trips; if it will feel different, what with all the significance that comes with it. All I know for sure is that it is my final trip home — and for that I couldn’t be happier.
